Queen's AMS Does Real Harm
As an after though in my last blog I linked to a story about Queen's canceling a food drive because it was based around sumo costumes. Apparently sumo costumes (the fun ones, we all know and love) are actually terribly racist.
OK full disclosure I lived in Kingston, I'm not a big fan of Queen's.
So since there were complaints that these suits were so offensive not only was the event cancelled but it was followed up with a over long letter of apology with an obligatory mini-celebration about how inclusive they are.
Well great, you avoided ruffling the feathers of some overly sensitive kids. I assume none of the complaints came from actual sumo wrestlers. While many will laugh at Queen's AMS for its silly over-reaction. I think more of us should be mad at Queen's for the real harm it caused.
Year-after-year Ontario food banks have to scramble to meet ever increasing demand. The people of Kingston who rely on the food bank were the real losers in this debacle. Queen's AMS should be ashamed that they placed the feelings of the second-hand offended over the real needs of people in the community.
