Liberal Materials

The Ontario Young Liberals have a postcard that they have been distributing on campuses across the province which strongly states that we need to Stand Up For Kyoto.  Their point I guess is that Canada needs to take strong action to reduce emissions and make good on our international commitments.  Bravo, I could not agree more.

However this is where I get confused.  This post card does is not from an environmentally focused NGO, it is not from the Green Party of Canada/Ontario.  It is from the Liberal party.  Taking a look at the Ontario Liberal's federal sister you can see why it shouldn't be coming from them.

In a recent post titled If You Want to Go green, Vote Green I listed the numerous Liberal MPs who voted against Standing Up For Kyoto.  These Liberals stood up instead to delay (read: kill) a bill that addressed the need for Canada to take strong action to reduce emissions and make good on our international commitments.  Most shocking was that the Liberals only eco-hero Stephane Dion was among these Liberals who stood against Kyoto.

It has been made fairly clear from politicians and scientist alike that there isn't much sand left in the hour glass and if we want to avoid catastrophe the time is now.  For a party only a year removed from their Go green Vote Red campaign their change of heart is concerning.

Environmentalists need to realize a few things:

  1. If we are going to take the steps necessary to address climate change we need government action.
  2. The Liberals have abandoned the issue.  They will not fix the problem.
  3. The NDP have been shown not to be trustworthy on this issue.  From Jack Layton bringing down the Martin government during climate talks.  To their Republican environmental policy in 2008. Even in Ontario they were not behind this issue.  Howard Hampton talked about strong environmental action while in Southern Ontario but his message in the North was more and bigger mills and mines.
  4. If you want to address climate change.  If you want to regain Canada's status in the world.  You have to vote Green.  The Green Party is the only party who will actually take the necessary actions.  Get involved with the Green Party of OntarioGet involved with the Green Party of Canada.
