I know that I normally avoid talking about policy on this blog but I couldn't resist. With the climate talks and Copenhagen quickly approaching I thought that I would take the time to explain that there is only one party that will take serious actions to address climate change.
The Conservatives have been making excuses that run the gamut from sticking there heads in the tar sands and pretending climate change isn't happening to Harper skipping Copenhagen unless everyone else is there. This government has made a mockery of Canada in the eyes of many nations due to their obstruction of any real progress on this looming crisis.
The Liberals had the chance to fix it and some (for example Liberal supporters) might argue they have done more for the environment than any other government. I think it's appropriate to point out that while the Liberals signed on to Kyoto they did very little to actually reduce our emissions which rose throughout the Liberal years. Last year the Liberals tried their best to paint themselves green. They adopted a watered down version of the Green Party's carbon tax policy and made their former environment minister the leader. The main problem with the Liberal's poll driven environmentalism is that a poor election showing had them running scared from the climate change issue. Most recently the Liberals voted to delay (kill) the climate change bill, including their only eco-hero Stephane Dion.
Next we come to the NDP who have a history of climate change hypocrisy. Well actually its a history of general hypocrisy but we'll stick to climate change. Jack Layton and his NDP sided with the Conservatives and brought down the Martin government during international climate talks all so he could potentially grab a few more seats. In the last election Jack abandoned sound environmental policy (a carbon tax) in favor of Republican style cap and trade. Again this is power over principles. The NDP believes that Canada needs strong policy to address climate change. They just believe they need wedge issues with the Liberals more.
You already know that Harper wont take action on climate change. After their election beating you know that anything related to Dion or the green shift will be scrubbed from the Liberal platform. At this point would you really trust Jack Layton to stick to his "principles" on anything?
I said this a couple weeks ago but it's worth repeating. If you want to go green vote Green. Quite frankly no one else will get the job done.
