BGM Council Elections

GPC LogoI’ve been avoiding going over the council race but I said that I would (and have been recently reminded that I said that I would) so I might as well get it over with.

First, before I get into things, I’m disappointed in the rather small number of people who are seeking a councilor-at-large position. Had I known that there were so few people running I would have likely thrown my hat in the ring. I’m not the only one who feels this way as I’ve heard similar sentiments from Greens in the Ottawa area. We have 7 choices for 5 positions.

Anyway there’s nothing we can do about that this time around. I might as well get into the options. I think I know who my first three choices will be, it’s the last two that I’m not really sure about. I’m not going to rank candidates but rather just let you know who I know I’ll be supporting, who I’m not sure about.

Guy Morazain Guy Morazain  Voting for Guy Morazain
I don’t know much about Guy (this will be something of a theme) but I read some stuff on his website and it impressed me. Specifically I like his commitment to team building and training.
John Streicker John Streicker  Voting for John Streicker
I’ve never met John (mostly because he lives in the Yukon) but I am impressed by what John has said on various email groups, by how strong the Greens are in the Yukon and by what I have heard from those who have worked with him.
Kate Storey Kate Storey  Voting for Kate Storey
I have also never met Kate but I have spoken to her briefly. I have heard from many people that Kate was a rather effective chair. A few even claimed she was the best chair. I think it has something to do with lumbar support. Again I don’t have any first hand experience to back that up but its what I’ve heard from people who’s opinions I generally respect. Anyway I have seen what Kate has said in various online communities and I’ll be supporting her.

Lorraine Rekmans Lorraine Rekmans  Not sure about Lorraine Rekmans
I have met Lorraine at various regional events that she makes it out to. I haven’t worked with her but I have heard good things from those that have.
Matthew Chisholm Matthew Chisholm  Not sure about Matthew Chisholm
I hear that Matthew is a young Green. I’ve worked a lot with young Greens, so... strike one. He seems like a competent and enthusiastic individual.
Rob Brooks Rob Brooks  Not sure about Rob Brooks
I’m honestly torn. I like Rob, he’s friendly (to me anyway) and very dedicated to the Green Party. He has sent some emails however, that could easily be described as incendiary. Achieving consensus on council would likely be easier without Rob, however the easiest solution isn’t always the best solution. I have my top three, and with two spots left over it’s essentially a three way tie.

One last thing, can we please drop bio-region from contestant profiles, we’re the Green Party of Canada with the support of one in ten Canadians, not the hippie confederacy.
