BGM Resolutions Part 4: Leadership
OK part four of five on Governance Resolutions. Today we tackle Leadership resolutions. This should be fun. Here's a link to our current constitution. I assume that these resolutions will be the most contentious at the BGM. We have an opportunity to help our party mature in to a more professional political organization of course we also have the option to shoot our selves in the foot.
Again if you haven't yet please check out:
- part one, Council Structure and Obligations
- part two, General Meeting and Party Procedure
- part three, Shadow Cabinet and Policy Development
| Resolution code | Resolution title and my thoughts on the resolution |
|---|---|
| G10-c12 | Amendment to Bylaw 2.1.4.5 - Allow Extension to Leader's Term |
| There are three options as to what do to with the leadership race at the BGM. This one lets council extend a leaders term in the event of a general election. It's not a bad option but there is a better option available. I'm voting no. | |
| G10-c29 | Party Leader Term |
| This resolution changes the leaders term from a fixed four years to one of variable length with a leadership review after each election. This is the way to go. Not only does it ensure that our leader can focus on electing Green MPs but it also hold the leader accountable for election results. This is the way to go. This is the resolution that needs to pass. I'll be voting yes and I urge everyone to do so as well. | |
| G10-c30 | Bylaw On When Leader Term Ends or Leader Position Becomes Vacant |
| So to remain a registered party we can't go without a leader for more than 30 days. This resolution gives council the authority to appoint an interim leader and trigger a leadership campaign. I'll be voting yes. | |
| G10-d02 | Leadership Endorsement 2010 |
| Having this as a question at the BGM I think is a bad idea. We are being asked to endorse our current leader. I think that this resolution will pass with a big margin, and it should. But that doesn't really get us anywhere as a party. If this doesn't pass with a big margin it hurts us a bit. If this doesn't pass it hurts us tremendously.
This resolution needs to pass with over 90% of the vote so make sure that you vote yes and that you get everyone you know to vote yes. Regardless of how you feel about Elizabeth's performance at the leader of this party, this one needs to pass as a sea of Green. |
|
| G10-d11 | Commitment to Leadership Race |
| Remember how I said we could shoot ourselves in the foot? This is an absolutely horrible idea. It would do unmeasurable damage to our party and to our chances in the next election. I could care less about Sylvie Lemieux's leadership ambitions. There are a lot of names sponsoring this resolution that I expect to be there, there are others (J.L.) that I am very disappointed to find on this list.
I said the previous resolution needs to pass with over 90% of the vote. Well, this one needs to fail by over 90% of the vote. This motion is a slap in the face to Canadians counting on a strong Green showing in the next election. Please do yourself, your fellow Greens and your party a favor by voting no. |
