$120 in 2010

We're coming up to the end of the year and I've been trying to decide how much I will be donating and where my donations will be going (local GPC? local GPO?  Central GPC? Central GPO?) and through this process I have also been thinking of ways that the GPC/GPO could raise money through small but steady donations.

One time donations are great but but for many people a one time donation of $50 is more difficult than a monthly donation of $10 even though the monthly donation of $10 will end up costing $70 more by the year's end.

I would really like to see the GPC/GPO challenge their members to make a 2010 pledge.  These donations would be of a set monthly value with a minimum of $10/month and a maximum of $90/month.  A monthly donation of $90 would add up to $1,080 (only $20 short of the maximum donation).

While donating $1,100 in one chunk is not something I would be able to do, I'm almost certain that I could budget for $90/month.  Here's a quick (Federal) breakdown:

Pledge Level Monthly Donation Total Donation Monthly Cost After Tax Total Cost After Tax
1 $10.00 $120.00 $2.50 $30.00
2 $15.00 $180.00 $3.75 $45.00
3 $20.00 $240.00 $5.00 $60.00
4 $25.00 $300.00 $6.25 $75.00
5 $30.00 $360.00 $7.50 $90.00
6 $40.00 $480.00 $11.67 $140.00
7 $50.00 $600.00 $16.67 $200.00
8 $60.00 $720.00 $21.67 $260.00
9 $75.00 $900.00 $31.25 $375.00
10 $90.00 $1,080.00 $41.25 $495.00

So I could donate my maximum amount by making monthly payments that are (and I'm slightly embarrassed about this) less than my cable bill.  By encouraging many relatively small but monthly donations someone who would have scoffed at the idea of donating $300 could find themselves making a donation of $25/month.

In the table above I included 'pledge levels'  I think we could increase the benefit more if we created a nice title for each level.  Tiered donation systems can be quite effective and you never know, a "title bump" might be all it takes to move some donors from $15 to $25 a month.  I'll admit I'm not very good at coming up with these sort of names but keeping with a very cliche theme you could call $10/month donors "Sprouts" and $90/month donors "Ever Greens".  These are just a two (perhaps poor) examples but I'm sure we could think of some great names.

John, I have to back up Dave

John,

I have to back up Dave here, at least up to a certain point. After multiple attempts at communication, I got in touch with the CA CFO on October 9th. He was new to the job and thought he didn't have to submit papers once they were given to the auditor. EO gave the CA until early November to re-register. After Oct 9th I left the remaining work to the CEO (Dave) and CFO.

I don't think it was Dave's fault that the CA got de-registered. Neither do I want to come down harsh on the CFO for that one mistake. Its a mistake, it happens.

I stopped following the issue after the 9th. If it got successfully re-registered after that I can't say; neither can I say who did what, or who didn't do what they were suppose to do.

Thanks Julien.

As a quick update once Feliks was contacted and was notified of the mix up he jumped right on it and got everything sorted out with Elections Ontario.   He spoke with the person there who was handling our de-registration and we were re-registered. Since it was again just a miscommunication Ottawa Vanier didn't lose any of its money.

Good idea Dave

According to public records, $120 in 2010 is roughly the average we can expect if we look at the historical donation patterns factor by the number of contributors.  Alice over at punditsguidea.ca does a nice job of keeping track of all of this.  Doing monthly amounts is the easiest way to go.  I do monthly at a level that I like and then use my discretion to support by-elections and other campaigns as they come along both at the Federal Level and in various Provinces.
By using a mix of monthly and ad hoc to campaigns, I get to choose how much goes to paying party overhead and how much goes to actual campaigns.  I like how that feels.  I find it empowering and 100% transparent - at least for the moneys I am putting into the mix.

Dave, it may be hard for you

Dave, it may be hard for you to donate to "local GPO" since your local riding has been de-registered by Elections Ontario for non-compliance (check the website.)

Hmm, seems you are the president of this riding. I'm also a riding association prez.

Is it too much to ask that you demonstrate minimal competence yourself before you give long-winded advice to others about national fundraising programs and a calling campaign into SGI?

The phrase "blow-hard" comes to mind.. John Ogilvie

Actually there was a minor

Actually there was a minor paper work mix up the auditor thought the CFO filed the paperwork and the CFO had the impression from the previous CFO that the auditor had submitted the paperwork for the 2008 filing.

Anyway we got it all sorted out with Elections Ontario and have to my knowledge been re-registered although they may have not update the website yet.
